Housing
Housing during this eight-week rotation will be provided in facilities off campus. Students share comfortable, fully furnished apartments located in the Library Hill complex (750 North 8th Street), about a five-block walk to the hospital (hospital security will transport you back to the apartment in evening hours if you feel it is necessary). Bath and bed linen is supplied at the beginning of the rotation, and laundry facilities are readily available. Since the linens are "hospital variety", you may want to bring your own favorite comforter, pillow, towels, etc. You will probably want to buy food and related items once you get to Milwaukee. SPECIAL NOTE: Please be advised that pets are not allowed in the Aurora student apartments and/or in Aurora facilities. Please make appropriate arrangements for your pets before you get to Milwaukee.
A packet containing your keys, directions, and information about your housing and parking assignments will be available in the hospital Security Office, located in the Emergency Room waiting area (west side of hospital; enter parking lot off State Street) any time after 3:30 pm the Friday before you start. Please be prepared to make a $15 deposit at the time you pick up your packet (CHECK REQUIRED; CASH WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED). You will get the check back at the end of the rotation when all ASMC property is returned.
Meals
Meals are the student's responsibility, but a thoroughly equipped kitchen is provided in your apartment (microwave, stove, dishwasher, refrigerator, as well as dishes and pots/pans). If cooking is not your strong point, a full service cafeteria is available at the hospital for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Snack food from vending machines is available 24 hours a day at various locations throughout the hospital. There are also a number of carry-out places within a block or two of your apartment. In addition, many noon conferences provide complimentary lunch to conference attendees. Milwaukee is also known for a number of great restaurants - take advantage of this while you are here.
Telephones
Telephones are provided in each unit; local calls are free, but long distance is the responsibility of the student.
Mail from the University is usually forwarded to the Clerkship Coordinator; however, during these eight weeks, you may want to tell people to address mail as follows:
(Your Name), Medical Studentc/o Kathy Musack
Aurora Sinai Medical Center
945 North 12th Street; OHC 2nd Floor
Milwaukee, WI 53233
Please DO NOT have your mail actually forwarded to this address through the Post Office. This causes confusion for the hospital mailroom and will result in you possibly not receiving your mail.
Parking
Parking is available free of charge in a ramp located on hospital grounds. While we understand this is away from your apartment, street parking in that area is limited and overnight parking is allowed only by permit from the Milwaukee Police Department - any parking tickets you receive are your responsibility. If you do choose to obtain a permit, they can be purchased at an approximate cost of $12 on a quarterly basis. Be aware that overnight parking is opposite in Milwaukee to what you might be used to in Madison. For instance, if today is the 8th and you are parking overnight until the 9th, you must park on the even side of the street. Again, any parking tickets you receive are your responsibility.
Exercise
Exercise facilities are available at no charge for students at the Library Hill complex.
Students can also use the facilities of the Aurora Sports Medicine Institute, located on the first floor of the main hospital building. Before beginning your "membership", you must call x7776 to set up an appointment for an orientation.
