Regional Info
Milwaukee, an Algonquian-derived name which translates to "gathering place by the river," is sometimes referred to as "A Great Place on a Great Lake."
Aurora Sinai is located less than a couple miles from the shores of Lake Michigan and its numerous beaches that offer the student a relaxing place to go during off hours. Even in the winter months a walk along the shoreline will inspire and create a sense of awe of nature at work. With the downtown area being close at hand, students coming to Milwaukee will find it convenient to explore the many ethnic restaurants, art galleries, and museums, or take in any number of performances that are going on at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, the Pabst Theater, or the Riverside Theater (just to name a few). Milwaukee's showcase for it's cultural diversity is displayed through the many ethnic festivals held throughout the year (African World Festival, Asian Moon Festival, Bastille Days, Bavarian Folk Fest, Festa Italiana, German Fest, Greek Festival, Holiday Folk Fair, Indian Summer, Irish Fest, Mexican Fiesta, Oktoberfest, and Polish Fest). In addition, one of the world's largest music fest, Summerfest, is held in late June/early July right along the lakefront. Those interested in parades can enjoy the Great Circus parade without the hassle of finding a place to park -- just walk over a couple of blocks and enjoy the extravaganza! Students can also easily get to the Bradley Center which houses professional sports such as Bucks Basketball, Admiral Hockey, Wave Soccer and Mustang Football.
Exploring beyond the downtown area, students can catch a Milwaukee Brewers' game at Miller Park, tour the Miller Brewing Company, visit the Milwaukee County Zoo (one of the best around), or skate a few laps around the Pettit National Ice Center. During the warmer months students are encouraged to bring their bicycles and enjoy the 76 miles of bike trails that wind through many of Milwaukee County's parks, or pack their clubs and swing through the county's 16 public golf courses.
As you can see, Milwaukee has a lot to offer and yet maintains that "small town" feel. Students will have no trouble finding something that interests them and that they can enjoy during their eight weeks in Milwaukee.
