Physician Assistant Program
The UW Department of Family Medicine (UW-DFM) is the academic home for the UW Physician Assistant (PA) Program.
Congruent with the UW-DFM, the PA Program's mission is to educate primary health care clinicians committed to the delivery of comprehensive, preventive, and therapeutic health care in a culturally sensitive manner.
The PA Program fulfills this mission through its 24-month undergraduate professional program. An alternative 36-month distance education track enables students to remain in their communities while completing the majority of their education, promoting subsequent clinical practice in their home communities.
Because of the generalist training the Program provides, practice opportunities for PAs exist in nearly every medical specialty, subspecialty, and practice setting.
Although the PA program carries out its daily operations independently, the UW-DFM provides administrative oversight and support. In addition, the PA Program's link with the UW-DFM offers:
- Didactic and preceptorial teaching opportunities for UW-DFM faculty
- Greater opportunities for collaboration between UW-DFM faculty, residents, and PA students
- Patient care experiences for PA students in UW-DFM clinics
- Increased visibility and potential employment opportunities for PA program graduates
