Augusta Curriculum & Schedule
The Augusta program is a separately matched alternative rural training site. Residents participate in inpatient and outpatient rotations in Eau Claire (view Eau Claire program curriculum and schedule), yet for the entire three-year program also have a rural clinical practice in Augusta.
Clinic time ranges from one to two half-days each week during the first year to four to five half-days per week during the third year.
Residents gain procedure experience at the Augusta Family Medicine Clinic (laceration repair, colposcopy, minor office surgery), at the Eau Claire Family Medicine Center (colposcopy, sigmoidoscopy), and at local hospitals.
In addition, residents perform monthly rounds on patients at the Augusta nursing home, and have ample opportunity for home visits.
Longitudinal Electives
Three year-long longitudinal electives complement the practice needs of rural physicians. Residents may choose one elective during their second and third years.
Maternity Care
Residents spend one half-day per month doing prenatal visits in Osseo, a nearby rural community where our residency is the sole provider of prenatal care. Each clinic session is supervised by a family medicine faculty member. Deliveries are performed at Eau Claire hospitals.
Directed self-study rounds out the experience. This elective adds a rural flavor and additional continuity patients to an already strong maternity care curriculum.
Sports Medicine
Residents spend one half-day per month in our model clinic with a family medicine faculty member certified (CAQ) in sports medicine. Hands-on and one-on-one didactics, directed readings, and an opportunity to serve as a team physician combine to provide strong skills in this area.
Geriatrics
Residents spend one half-day per month in activities that further prepare them to care for elderly patients.
Under the supervision of a family medicine faculty member certified (CAQ) in geriatrics, residents participate in the region's only geriatric assessment clinic, home visits, and additional nursing home involvement. Directed readings and projects round out the experience.
