Tom Hartjes, MD (Clinical Assistant Professor) received a Katcher-Schalch award from the student-run MEDiC clinic program during an award presentation on November 17, 2025. The award is given to student-nominated clinicians who embody compassion for patients and dedication to teaching as exhibited by “MEDiC legends” Drs. Murray Katcher and Don Schalch.
As part of the ceremony, the words of a student leader were shared to illustrate Hartjes’s compassion and dedication. “Dr. Hartjes has demonstrated continuous commitment towards serving the patients of the Southside clinic, providing care in a compassionate and kind manner. One specific instance I recall was when he and his Med/PA team were caring for an unhoused patient who was living with a psychiatric disorder. His diligence to ensuring that the patient received the support that they needed did not go unnoticed.” Student leaders also noted his skill for teaching in clinic and his willingness to share his wealth of clinical knowledge when students have questions.
MEDiC is a student-run program of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Health professions students and volunteer clinicians offer free health care to underserved populations at four student-run clinics. MEDiC also partners with three other free clinics.
