Bio
Wendy Slutske, PhD is a faculty member at DFMCH and the Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Slutske’s background is in clinical psychology with additional training in behavioral genetics and psychiatric epidemiology and biostatistics. Slutske’s research originally focused on risk and protective factors for alcohol use and disorder but has broadened to include the misuse of tobacco, cannabis, illicit drugs, and disordered gambling.
Slutske has published many high-impact papers based on secondary data analyses of large-scale cross-sectional surveys such as National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC), National Comorbidity Survey Replication Survey (NCS-R), and National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). Slutske has also published three major longitudinal studies: the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), and the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health & Development Study.
Research Interests
Dr. Slutske uses epidemiologic and behavioral genetic methods. Slutske’s recent research has focused on:
- Exploring potential gene-environment correlations and gene-environment interactions between risk for addictive disorders and neighborhood contextual factors such as disadvantage
- Using genetically informed research designs to identify potential causal influences on addictive disorders such as early age of substance use initiation and living in a high-risk neighborhood
