James Bigham, MD, MPH, FAAFP
James Bigham, MD, MPH, FAAFP is a 2026 recipient of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health Dean’s Teaching Award. The award honors outstanding contributions in student education in medical school programs.
Bigham was recognized for making substantial contributions to medical student education as a small group facilitator and clinical preceptor and being known for “teaching in a way that intentionally fosters a positive learning environment grounded in respect, connection, and professional formation.”
Bigham is the course director for Family Medicine 913 Firearm Injury Prevention and is a phase two department block leader for chronic preventive care providing special instruction on firearm injury prevention, vaccine hesitancy, and community engagement. He is the co-founder of Lock, Stock, and Barrel, a hands-on firearm injury prevention program connecting health professional students, clinicians, and the firearm community.
The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health Dean’s Teaching Awards were established in 1992 and celebrate faculty members who demonstrate outstanding teaching and consistently create engaging, positive learning environments while demonstrating a deep commitment to student success. Awardees are selected by previous winners.
