Summary of Study: The purpose of this study is to compare asthma treatments for African American/Black people who have asthma that is not well controlled on a low dose of inhaled steroid. This study will also try to find out if adults and children differ in how they respond to these asthma medications.
Objective: 1. To identify the best option for add-on therapy in African Americans/Blacks inadequately controlled on low-dose inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) and 2. To determine whether the response in African American/Black individuals aged 12 or greater differs from that of African American/Black children aged 5-11.
Study Design: Asthma is a common diagnosis in primary care. WREN will extract lists of potentially eligible patient names from the DFM EHR for recruitment purposes for the BARD study. When data extract is verified, letters signed by the Medical Director (MD) from the patients’ primary care clinic with opt in/out cards and return envelopes, would be mailed to all potentially eligible patients.
Interested patients may return the opt-in card, call the Research Coordinator or wait to be contacted. During first telephone contact, WREN Research Coordinators would administer a verbal informed consent/HIPAA Authorization and complete a brief screening interview over the telephone. If the subject is eligible, the screening form would be faxed over to Asthmanet Research Coordinators.
