Congratulations to Jonathan Temte, MD, PhD, MS (Professor, CHS), Mary Checovich, MS, CCRC (Regulatory Coordinator), Marlon Mundt, PhD (Associate Professor), and Shari Barlow, BA (Research Program Manager) on having their influenza presentation selected as a 2022 North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) Clinical Pearl! Presented at NAPCRG’s annual meeting, “Rapid Detection of Influenza Outbreaks in Long-Term Care Facilities Reduces Emergency Room Visits and Hospitalization” was chosen as one of the top research studies that will impact clinical practice.

The study explored the role of rapid diagnostics in detecting influenza in long-term care facilities, resulting in increased early treatment of influenza, use of antiviral prophylaxis for other at-risk residents, fewer hospitalizations, reduced mortality, and lower healthcare-associated costs during influenza season. Irene Hamrick, MD, FAAFP, AGSF, CMD (University of Cincinnati College of Medicine) and Erik Reisdorf, MPH (Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygeine) co-authored the abstract.

NAPCRG is a multidisciplinary organization for primary care researchers that supports the pursuit of primary care research. Its annual meeting is the largest primary care research meeting of its kind. NAPCRG Clinical Pearls are selected annually by their Community Clinician Advisory Group and are presented by group members at local, regional, and national venues.
