Congratulations to the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) on receiving a 2023 American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Program of Excellence Award for Excellence in Mentorship! The program was recognized as one of the top family medicine interest groups in the country for its leadership and values demonstrated on campus through creativity and commitment of this student-led organization. The FMIG was recognized at the AAFP National Conference in Kansas City, MO this July.
“We commend this year’s FMIG Program of Excellence Award winners for their resiliency and commitment to aiding the next generation of doctors to understand what it means to be a family physician. They are also helping build a strong primary care workforce that ensures all patients can access equitable, comprehensive health care,” said Margot Savoy, MD, MPH, senior vice president, education, inclusiveness, and physician well-being at the AAFP.
The UW FMIG is a student-run organization that is supported by the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health and the American Academy of Family Physicians. It is structured to give medical students with an interest in family medicine a supportive environment in which to explore family medicine and gain experience in the specialty. The program offers a variety of talks, workshops, and social events and advised by Jacob Bryan, MD, FMIG faculty director, and Nicole Watson, FMIG staff advisor.
The AAFP FMIG Program of Excellence Award aims to recognize the unique achievements of family medicine interest groups across the country and celebrate the contributions that FMIGs make to the specialty of family medicine.
The mission of the American Academy of Family Physicians is to improve the health of patients, families, and communities by serving family physicians’ needs with professionalism and creativity with a vision of transforming health care to achieve optimal health for everyone.
